What makes a username rare?

An honest look at what we measure—and what we can’t know.

Character first. Hype second.

OG User Rater uses fixed rules. The same name, platform and scoring configuration produce the same result. We analyze length, composition, character transitions, repetition, symmetry, dictionary associations and a simple English pronounceability heuristic.

Pattern quality10%Subjective heuristic
Collector desirability10%Evidence required
Market appeal5%Evidence required

When evidence is absent, collector desirability and market appeal are marked unscored. The remaining 85% of default weights is renormalized to 100%. For example, each supported score is multiplied by its weight, the products are added, and the sum is divided by 85. Changing weights in the owner dashboard affects subsequent calculations.

How price estimates work

Each name gets a type based on its platform and shape, like a 3-letter Discord name or a 4-letter real word on TikTok. In October 2026 we looked at what names of each type are listed for on username marketplaces and set a price range for each type. A name’s score decides where it sits in that range. Every visitor sees the same estimate for the same name.

These are asking prices, not completed sales, and real deals vary a lot. Buying or selling accounts breaks the rules of Discord, Roblox, Instagram and TikTok, and accounts can be banned. Listings we checked:

Rarity is a product-defined description

95–100 Legendary · 90–94 Elite · 80–89 Very Rare · 70–79 Rare · 55–69 Uncommon · 35–54 Common · below 35 Basic. These are descriptive ratings, not empirically verified scarcity. Theoretical combinations are not available-user counts.

Four platforms, different constraints

Discord: 2–32 lowercase letters, numbers, periods or underscores. No consecutive periods. Source

Instagram: Provisional: 1–30 letters, numbers, periods or underscores. Platform confirmation required. Source

Roblox: 3–20 letters or numbers, with at most one underscore, never first or last. Source

TikTok: Letters, numbers, periods and underscores; no final period. 2–24 ASCII length rule is provisional. Source

Rules were researched on October 18, 2026. Instagram syntax and TikTok length/ASCII assumptions are provisional. Moderation, reserved names and real-time eligibility are not checked. A syntax pass is not an availability or ownership check.

Market evidence has to earn its place

Estimates require at least three approved, non-fictional, verified username-only sales from two sources, within 365 days and with at least 60% feature similarity. We compare length, composition, overall quality and recognized meaning. Median-relative outliers are excluded. Sales are weighted by similarity and recency. Listings are displayed separately and never treated as completed sales.

Non-USD imports require an explicit FX rate and timestamp within seven days of the evidence date. Low/high ranges use 20th/80th percentile observations; the central estimate is a weighted mean. Confidence is low under ten qualifying sales and medium thereafter. No heuristic dollar prices are fabricated.

Platform policies still apply

Names are interesting to study; that does not make account transfers permitted. See Discord’s terms, Roblox’s terms, Instagram’s terms, and TikTok’s regional terms. This product does not claim names or automate account transfers.

Community taste stays independent

The stabilized positive rating uses (upvotes + 5) / (total votes + 10). This neutral prior prevents one or two votes from dominating established entries. Community votes never change the rarity calculation.
